The EU PAL-COPD project was proudly represented at the 19th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC), held from 29–31 May 2025 in Helsinki, Finland. With more than 2,000 delegates from across the globe, the EAPC congress continues to be a landmark event for the international palliative care community—and this year, EU PAL-COPD made a strong impression across multiple formats.
Showcasing our research
Our partners from Lancaster University’s International Observatory on End of Life Care (ULANC) presented two posters during the scientific poster sessions:
A palliative care intervention for people with advanced Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Cultural adaptation and standardisation from the UK to other European contexts
How to set up an international public and patient involvement (PPI) group to adapt a UK-based intervention to other European countries?
Didar Akkaya: “We adapted the UK-based ICLEAR palliative care model for advanced COPD to six European healthcare settings through a multi-stage participatory process, ensuring both cultural relevance and fidelity. This collaborative effort offers a practical roadmap for tailoring care interventions across diverse international contexts.”
Spotlight session on EU-funded research
Julie Stevens, a Postdoctoral Researcher at End-of-Life Care Research Group, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, represented EU PAL-COPD in the dedicated EU Projects session, with a talk on “Cultural adaptation of ICLEAR: Optimising palliative care in COPD across Europe.” Her presentation highlighted the importance of cultural sensitivity in designing and implementing care interventions, offering real-world insights from stakeholder engagement across countries.
Beyond formal presentations, EU PAL-COPD gained additional visibility at the congress through distribution of branded flyers at the EAPC exhibition stand. The congress also included highlights such as a keynote by the EAPC President, a welcome message from Finland’s Minister of Social Affairs and Health, and the launch of the EAPC Atlas of Palliative Care in the European Region 2025.
As a valued partner in the EU PAL-COPD consortium, EAPC also played a key role in ensuring the project’s strong presence and visibility throughout the event. We warmly thank all colleagues, contributors and visitors who helped make this congress such a rewarding platform for learning, sharing and connection.
With the next EAPC Congress scheduled for 14–16 May 2026 in Prague, EU PAL-COPD partners look forward to returning with key findings and continued contributions to palliative care advancement across Europe.
